What Do You Want To Know?

I'm buying a used truck... is this a good deal?

My neighbor is selling his 1993 Nissan P/U Truck, it's automatic, short bed, 2WD, and has lots of accessories. Plus it gets about 24mpg :) He says that he has taken really good care of it, and it's always been reliable. He's never had to do any major repairs on it, and it has 185,000 miles on it. I really like this truck, and he only wants $500 for it because he already has 3 trucks and wants to get rid of it, plus he knows me. The only problem is that the transmission is kind of old, so third gear isn't working very well. He says I can buy a used transmission with a warrenty and have someone put it in for under $400. That means that the whole deal is less than a thousand for a good little truck, do you think I should buy it?

Best Answer:

I think its a good deal ,you don't get much today for a thousand bucks, just the fact you know whom your buying from your one step ahead. I have bought and appraised thousand of cars through the years and just to make sure the truck is right for you follow this simple test I did for 30 years, study this web page on my website http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html if the Truck is still of interest contact a shop and get the price to fix the tranny before you make a final decision. If the mechanic feels you need other work done at same time to make Truck perfect and the total cost under $1500. its still a good deal.

not a bad deal, those trucks run forever, their bodies just don't last.

Well with almost 200k miles on it... However, it is only five-hundred dollars. That's a pretty good deal. Go for it!

it sounds good to me. Especially since he lives next door to you and is willing to help out with it. go for it!

sounds like a good deal but has a lot of mileage and the transmission is really critical. we've replaced transmissions on a couple of our vehicles and it cost anywhere from a thousand to 2 thousand dollars. but with that its still a good deal

If it's cheap, it's cheap! and that's the name of that game. But know that yes the transmission is in fact broken and you will need it to be changed out. There is no way you can get a transmission for $400. I paid more than that on a transmission on an old small car. then i paid to get it installed. $400? no way. $800.
